Twelve-year-old Jacob Lubin sustained second and third degree burns from his knees to his shoulders last Tuesday evening, December 9, in a freak accident involving a gas can and an outside fire. According to his mother, Christine Lubin, he was outside their home, located on the Sam Poore Road, when he dropped the gas can he was holding, causing the gasoline to splash on his body and because he was standing close to a yard fire, the fire jumped to the gas on his body. Lubin ran into the family home where his father and another sibling wrapped him in a blanket to smother the fire. While his mother called 911, she also brought a water hose into the home and sprinkled him lightly with the cool water to help ease the pain. He was treated and transported to the helipad in Old Town where ShandsCair then transported him to the burn unit at Shands in Gainesville. His mother also stated that he was possibly looking to stay in the hospital until February or March, depending on how well the surgery and skin grafts go. He is a 7th grade student at Ruth Rains Middle School. Collection cans have been placed at various businesses throughout the county to help this family in their time of need. He is the son of John and Christine Lubin. Cards can be mailed to him in care of Shands Burn Unit, 1600 SW Archer Road, Gainesville, FL 32610. |
